we have dreamt for years of doing a Tiny Desk Concert, but as an animated band, it’s impossible! for our new song “are you gonna wake up?” featuring our friends Dave Coresh (93PUNX, NOFUN!) ^ Andrew Dost (Metal Bubble Trio, fun.) we brought NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert and song collaborators Coresh and Dost into the breakfast tacos universe. we also took this opportunity to include some of our supporters in the audience, including: Mark de Clive-Lowe (producer and musician), Brandon Foy (producer), Naomi Drome (dancer and artist), OKHUMAN (artist), YMTK (artist), and Volcom.

The song itself started off as a bossa nova collaboration between Dost and breakfast tacos and swiftly took on a new life. “Those synth parts [Andrew sent] sound so beautiful, our first thought was of an angelic cherub playing the French horn at the pearly gates,” said Wilkinson about the progression of the song, “We wanted the sound to have a happy-go-lucky exterior inspired by bossa nova music, indie-pop, and hip-hop.” Lyrically, Wilksinson wanted a contrast that would convey the anxiety, stress, and frustration being felt at the time [March 2022]. “The static negativity that resides in the recesses of our minds, and how it can move the forefront and just consume you. Waking up feeling angry and sad letting it control your day. Something is off. This is the internal struggle of my character. Optimistic-like zen slowly being pushed back by existential dread. Presenting a positive and happy exterior but constantly grappling with tough subject matter, and keeping that buried inside. An inside full of worries about beginnings and ends, life and death, global warming, war, greed, the meaning of life, technology, etc.”
Musician Dave Coresh recorded his verse on the song, which beautifully and poetically address a variety of social issues. Coresh discussed his lyrics by saying “‘I shoot the shit like it’s an uzi,’ is a play on the mundane small talk and gun violence & how both things are prominent in society. People get shot & people shoot the shit every day… We oblige by these unseen rules or layers that dictate or structure our lives, with little awareness or ‘waking up’ you can see the inner workings of the things working against you. From emotions to society to pressure capitalism. I approached my verse with this sleeping beauty-like veil over my eyes and try to get the listener to wake up in this process.” Wilksinson closes the song with the lyrics “breathe in and out of your head,” as a way to “redirect with thoughts of love, beauty, and gratitude. Using meditation to help clear what we have no control over.
